How to Fix Error 96 Encoding Issue while Sending SMS on Android

Many users have complained of an Error while sending SMS in their Android device, Error 96 which comes with the pop up message – “Messaging – Message not sent, Tap to review the message and try again“. It is usually seen while trying to send an SMS using the built in Messaging App on any network – Airtel, Jio, Idea, Vodafone, BSNL, etc. on your Android smartphone.

There are three reasons which might be the reason for this error to appear:

  1. Issue with the SMS App
  2. Issue from the Service provider or Network providers side
  3. Wrong Access Point Name (APN) settings

So as we have seen the suspected reasons for this Error 96 to pop up we have two solutions which have been found to be useful in most cases.

Method 1: Update Refresh SMSC:

With this method we tend to enter the Service mode or Engineering mode on your device and Refresh or update SMSC which is seen to fix the Issue. Let us look at the steps by which we can Refresh SMSC

Step 1: Go to Dialer

Step 2: Now Enter *#*#4636#*#* and tap on the Call option

Step 3: Now you will be in the Service or Engineering mode and see “Phone info”

Step 4: Here you will be seeing the option “SMSC”

Step 5: To the right you can see the option – Update Refresh which will change the number in the SMSC

Method 2: Use another SMS App:

  • You can install any third part SMS App like – Google Messages, SMS Organizer (Microsoft)
  • After installing the App. make sure to choose it as the default SMS App
  • Send an SMS to check if you are getting any Error message

You can use any third party App which you find meeting all your requirements, but make sure that you do not use any illegal apps for SMS. As you will be receiving OTP’s and other crucial information concerned to your bank.
