Lenovo has launched their second generation Phab series device, the Phab 2 Plus which is targeting the Xiaomi Mi Max which is the 6.4-inch Display size device. There are no other devices in this price segment to compete with and considering the screen size of 6.4-inch it is quite a huge device which makes the market or target audience very small as well. So if you are one, who is in love with smartphones or phablets which we can call them, the two major options are the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus and the Xiaomi Mi Max.
The Lenovo Phab Plus comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD IPS LCD display in comparison to the 6.44-inch Full HD IPS LCD display in the Mi Max. The Lenovo Phab 2 Plus is powered by an octa-core 1.3GHz Mediatek MT8783 SoC in comparison to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC in Mi Max. The Display in both the devices are what make them stand in a separate category between the smartphone and tablets with a display size of 6.4-inch in Phab 2 Plus in comparison to the slightly larger 6.44-inch display in Mi Max. But the Mi Max comes with a screen-to-body ratio of 74.8% in comparison to the 73.5% screen-to-body ratio of 73.5% in the Phab 2 Plus which brings both the devices to similar size to hold and use. The Mi Max is slim at 7.5mm while the Phab 2 Plus is a lot thicker at 9.6mm. Both devices have a Full HD IPS display with similar pixel density, in terms of protection the Mi Max comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection.
The Lenovo Phab 2 Plus comes with Octa-core 1.3GHz MediaTek MT8783 SoC with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage while the Mi Max comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor with Adreno 510 GPU coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. Both have expandable storage with Hybrid SIM slots. Performance wise on paper the Mi Max is a better performer but we can confirm the exact difference in performance one we use the Phab 2 Plus for a few days.
In terms of camera as well on paper the Mi Max looks the better choice with a 16MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection auto focus and dual tone LED flash, but the Phab 2 Plus also has a decent camera with 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and some additional features like laser autofocus / PDAF and Dual LED flash along with support for Augmented reality mode in the camera app. Phab 2 Plus comes with an 8MP front facing camera with f/2.2 aperture while the Mi Max comes with a 5MP front facing camera with f/2.0 aperture which are almost similar in performance.
Both the devices come with decent battery capacities, the Mi Max comes with 4850 mAh battery capacity while the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus comes with a 4050mAh battery, both devices do not support fast charging which makes it difficult to charge the huge batteries which will be taking a lot of time. Both the devices are priced similarly at Rs. 14,999, the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus will be available exclusively on Amazon India in Gunmetal Grey and champagne Gold color. The Xiaomi Mi Max will be available on Mi.com in Gold, Silver and Dark Grey color.
Final Verdict between Xiaomi Mi Max vs Lenovo Phab 2 Plus:
Both the devices are not just priced similarly but are very similar in terms of specifications as well. The Mi Max has a slight advantage with a better Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC and the camera in the Mi Max although having higher Megapixels the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus has better features. With the Mi Max battery being higher, the Xiaomi Mi Max has an edge over the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus as per our initial impressions.
