The smartphone camera took a jiant leap in 2017 with many Dual camera set up smartphones being launched, but the best of the lot the Single lens camera in the Pixel 2 and the Pixel XL 2. The best feature on this device was the DSLR like Portrait made which was acheived by AL and software only and not with a dual camera set up.
So if you are one someone like me who has been lusting to get their hands on the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL just for the camera but is stuck with other Android devices, there is a way to get the Portrait mode thanks to Charles Chow who has created a Google Camera mod for this mode to be used in any Android device running on Oreo 8.0 or later.
With the Camera NX mod created by Charles Chow, you will be getting all the options and features included in the Google Camera App along with the Portrait mode seen in the Pixel 2 camera.
Camera NX app works on Older Google devices like original Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.
Camera NX Enhanced works of Non Google devices running on Android Oreo 8.0 or later like OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlsu 5/5T, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 etc.
Talking about how Google has managed to get the Portrait mode, Charles said – Google uses Pixel detector data to calculate portrait effect on the Back lens and uses software method on the Front lens.
Portrait mode is programmed to work only when the camera detects a human face. XDA Senior Member Arnova8G2 has further modified the APK which brings functionality to phones running on Android 8.0 and above and it doesn’t require root access to function. The newly updated APK from Arnova8G2 also allows for Portrait Mode to work via the front-facing camera.
