Asus has launched their latest budget segment smartphone, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 which has been price quite aggressively to take on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 is priced starting at Rs. 10,999. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a massive 5000mAh battery as seen in the previous Max line up devices. It sports a 5.99-inch IPS LCD FullHD display and powered by Snapdragon 836 processor coupled with Stock Android 8.1 Oreo.
Both the Zenfone Max Pro M1 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro come with certain similarities in terms of specifications –
Similarities between Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro:

The similarities end here while there are various differences which might make you think a lot before coming to a conclusion on which device to purchase. Let us look at all the differences in detail comparing both devices in every aspect.
Differences between Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro:
Display: Both devices come with similar 5.99-inch FHD+ displays with resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. a minor difference between the two displays is the more pronounced rounded borders in the Redmi Note 5 Pro in comparison to the less rounded borders. When it comes to displays, both the devices are similar in terms of display.
Both devices come with Octa-core Snapdragon 636 processor with Adreno 509 GPU. The difference is seen in RAM with both having various variants available – 3GB or 4GB or 6GB having 32GB and 64GB storage variants respectively in Zenfone Max Pro M1 .
The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with two options – 4GB RAM or 6GB RAM with 64GB storage. Both devices come with expandable storage using microSD card, 256GB expandable in Zenfone Max Pro M1.
Both devices are quite similar in terms of performance, there is no visible lag etc when using multiple apps. One advantage which the Zenfone Max Pro M1 has over the Redmi Note 5 Pro is the Stock Android OS which certainly gives it an edge while using multiple apps, it is slightly smoother.

Software and Battery:
The Zenfone Max PRo M1 is the clear winner in terms of Software with Stock Android Oreo OS out of the box and the company has mentioned that it will be getting the Android P and Android Q OS updates as well. With Redmi Note 5 Pro available with Android Nougat 7.1 with MIUI 9.0 skin on top, both on paper and in real life usage the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is the clear winner in the OS department (unless you are a fan on MIUI 9).
In terms of battery as well the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is the clear winner both on paper with a bigger 5000mAh battery in comparison to the 4000mAh battery in the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The 5000mAh battery coupled with Stock Android gives more battery life in comparison to the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
In terms of OS and Battery, the Zenfone Max PRo M1 is the clear winner with Stock Android OS and recent OS along with bigger 5000mAh battery.
Camera comparison between Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Zenfone Max Pro M1:
Both the devices come with Dual Rear camera set up with the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 having a 13MP+5MP (in 3GB/4GB RAM variants) or 16MP+5MP (in 6GB RAM variant) sensors at the back with PDAF, EIS and LED flash, while the front camera is an 8MP or 16MP shooter which comes with portrait mode.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro on the other hand comes with 12MP Primary with 5MP secondary rear camera set up with PDAF and LED flash while the front camera is a 20MP Sony IMX 376 sensor with LED selfie light and Beautify 4.0. It is capable of recording FullHD videos at 30fps.
When looking at the samples and overall performance of the cameras in low light, regular lighting, outdoor light and Portrait modes, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has a slight edge. But when it comes to the Front camera, the Redmi Note 5 Pro takes the lead by a large margin.
Asus has done an impressive job in terms of pricing with the Zenfone Max Pro M1 being priced Rs. 1000 less that its counterpart in the 4GB and 64GB variant and Rs. 2,000 less for the 6GB and 64GB variant which will be released shortly. Zenfone Max Pro M1 also comes with in a 3GB and 32GB storage variant which is Rs. 10,999 while the Redmi Note 5 Pro does not have any such variant.

Verdict – Which phone is better Zeonfone Max Pro M1 or Redmi Note 5 Pro?
Both the devices are similar in terms of Display, design, Performance and hardware. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 slightly surges ahead with its Stock Android Oreo OS out of the box along with its higher 5000mAh battery capacity.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a better Front facing camera when compared to the Zenfone Max Pro M1. The other important thing to note is the pricing, with the two variants of the Zenfone Max Pro M1 being 1k and 2k Rs cheaper than the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the fact that you have to keep waiting through the irritating Flash sales to buy a Redmi Note 5 Pro makes the Zenfone Max Pro M1 a clear winner.
